Wampum fine boric acid tear stain powder is used to control and prevent tear stains.
Boric acid has anti-microbial properties, as well as mild bleaching properties (as do many weak organic acids), but its main contribution to the prevention of tear stain may be its ability to stabilize porphyrins present in the tears, saliva, and urine.
The use of boric acid for tear stains is only to be halted once the show career of an animal has been completed.
